BIO

Rui Neves is a physicist graduated by the University of Lisbon in Portugal, where he has completed Licenciatura (BSc) and Mestrado (MSc) degrees in physics, and by the University of Durham in the UK, where in 1997 he was awarded a PhD degree in high energy physics and gravitation (elementary particle theory). From 1997 to 2007 Rui Neves worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow and as Assistant Professor, mainly at Universidade do Algarve (UAlg) and Centro Multidisciplinar de Astrofísica do Instituto Superior Técnico (CENTRA/IST). During this time, continuing the work done on the MSc and PhD thesis, Rui Neves has done research in particle phenomenology, string theory, non-perturbative quantum field theory and higher dimensional D-brane world models. He has also applied high energy mathematical physics knowledge to the propagation of photons in turbid and biological media, an important theme in biomedical physics. Since 2008 Rui Neves is Research Assistant Professor at Unidade de Investigação Educação e Desenvolvimento (UIED) and Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT/UNL), where he has been working as a researcher and professor in physics education, specifically on the implementation of action research methodologies to improve the development and field validation of physics (and related mathematics) active learning activities with computational modelling in various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education contexts, mainly at secondary and university levels, where these activities are relevant.
